Dragon

By Crystal Arbogast

Deep in slumber
One summer night
A dream came to me
Out of bright starlight

A vision appeared
Behind my sleeping eyes
The form of a dragon
Out of the mist did rise

His appearance was frightening
I wanted to run away
But his eyes were captivating
I decided to stay

He started to speak
And called out to me
With fire like breath
He whispered, "Do you believe?"

Believe in the magic
Of a bygone world?
Of warriors and Viking ships
Their battle masts unfurled?

Of elves and fairies
And love everlasting?
For these things are forgotten
With time's ceaseless passing

The gods of the wood
Are buried away
Awaiting rebirth
Awaiting the day

For mankind's dreams
To awaken their slumber
Releasing the hammer
And the power of Thor's thunder

The dragon's voice softened
And ended with a plea
It echoed in my mind
As he sank in a mist like sea

Could you believe, O mortal one
In Merlin's mystic visions?
For without imagination
Life itself is but a prison!
